The 44th Annual Spring Fundraising Banquet was held on April 17 at Andiamo’s banquet facility in Warren.  Imagine valet parking, virtually no check-in, pre-assigned seating, no cash table check-out line and you will have an idea how well it went.  Many of our 334 guests loved the new facility, the food and the great service.  We were honored to have a record number of both sponsors, 19 and donors, 91.  The banquet netted $37, 212.  We very much appreciate the participation by our sponsors, donors and guests.

This year’s recipient of the Chapter’s Coldwater Conservation Award was given to Huron Pines.  The award is given to individuals or groups who the Chapter feels best exemplify the principles of Trout Unlimited regarding the conservation, protection and restoration of Michigan’s coldwater resources.  Huron Pines is a not-for-profit conservation organization that serves the 11 county region of Northeast Michigan founded in 1973.  The mission of Huron Pines is to conserve the forests, lakes and streams of Northeast Michigan.  They achieve this mission by working to support grassroots conservation partners, coordinating larger scale restoration projects, using a hands-on approach to improve natural resources, and building partnerships between the public and private sector.  Recent projects have included the Grayling Stormwater Project, Au Sable River Large Woody Debris program, Ocqueoc River Watershed Project, the Great Lakes Better Backroads Program, the Pigeon River Habitat Initiative, and the new Huron Pines AmeriCorps Program.

Action Alert: Water Withdrawl Update Print E-mail

Water withdrawal legislation is pending on the floor of both the Michigan House of Representatives and Senate that is tie-barred to the Great Lakes Compact legislation. While the competing bills are in agreement regarding 90% of their content the differences, however, are significant. The current Senate bill SB 860 S-3, would allow water removal from Michigan’s cold water streams and rivers that resulted in a loss of up to 5% of the thriving species. The water removed would be about 25% of the low summer flows. The pending bill in the House limits the effects of water withdrawal on cold water streams and rivers only to the point where less than 1% of the thriving species is impacted. Senator Prussi offered a floor amendment to SB 860 that reduces the coldwater adverse impact limit to less than 1%.

We believe that the Michigan legislation is going to try to wrap up the Great Lakes Compact legislation this month. It is critical that we continue to contact our Senators and Representatives and let them know that we cannot accept water withdrawal legislation that sanctions any adverse impact on cold water streams and rivers greater than 1%. We cannot accept a compromise on this position because the companion assessment tool is untested and needs to be implemented cautiously.

You spoke up a month ago and you were heard. We ask that you do it again. Let your elected official know how you feel about this incredible important issue. The future of Michigan’s coldwater resources depend on it. We have attached a sample email for your reference. You can find your appropriate legislators online at www.house.michigan.gov/find_a_rep.asp and www.senate.michigan.gov/SenatorInfo/find-your-senator.htm. Of particular importance is contacting your Republican legislators, as Democrats are already largely in favor of the better House bill, but letting all of the legislators know your opposition or support is crucial. Please make the phone call to express your opinions on this. If you are not comfortable making a phone call, than at least send an email. Let them know that you are a voter in their district and that this matters to you.

Named after Paul H. Young, a cane rod builder and fly-fishing pioneer from Detroit, the Paul H. Young Chapter of Trout Unlimited is a non-profit grassroots organization in metropolitan Detroit whose mission is to conserve, protect and enhance the watersheds which support wild trout and salmon.

Founded on the banks of the Au Sable River in 1959, Trout Unlimited has grown into a widely influential organization of over 152,000 members, nationwide. The originators of Trout Unlimited knew that what is good for trout is ultimately good for man, and that cold, clean running water is the lifeblood of our planet.

In Michigan, many of our natural resources have been damaged by sand erosion, hydroelectric dams, Antrim oil development, and urban expansion.

Consequently, a legion of the 1100 members of the Paul H. Young Chapter of Trout Unlimited have dedicated countless hours of work on stream projects to help sustain the fragile ecological balance upon which the health of fish depend.

If the present damage to our environment remains unchecked, future generations may never know the pleasure that comes from fishing for trout and salmon at the beautiful places in which they live.
